austingill asked: How did you become a photographer? Im trying to be one but im not quite good enough yet. What was your first step?
practice practice practice! I know it sounds stupid but honestly just keep going out and shooting as often as you can. use close friends to start with, who won’t mind if you fuck it up! I’ve learnt a lot of little tricks, even things just like making sure the girls lipstick doesn’t need re-applying, or that the model has taken their phone out their pocket (nothing worse than a phone bulge to ruin a picture). I’ve just learnt to take notice of little things like that and when you dont make little mistakes they all contribute to an all-round better picture. And the most important thing is probably confidence, not feeling stupid asking the model to do something that to them might feel dumb, but actually photographs well. Like now, I’m never scared to tell the model what to do, even if I’ve never met them before, and usually they trust me and feel comfortable with it because I have such a big portfolio now, and I think the confidence comes because I’ve shot so many times that it’s just second nature to me now. :)
